Looking for information on Lower Milford Township? What is the Township government up to? Need to find a phone number or information on local stores or events? Interested in history of the region? Want to discuss issues in the Township? You might be able to find it here!.

Lower Milford Township is unique. It is primarily agricultural but is also a bedroom community. It has a rural feeling but is just 10-15 miles from Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, 50 miles or so from Philadelphia, and 80 miles from New York City. One can relax in the country but can enjoy all the excitement of big city living.

However, this great environment is constantly being assailed. We believe that large development is a detriment to our quality of life. To protect this wonderful atmosphere for the next generations, we need to be aware of potential changes that can be detrimental. Knowledge is power. Hopefully, this site can help in keeping citizens aware and involved.

In addition to factual information and analysis, we have started a blog, with a slightly irreverent slant, aimed at the job the Township and School District is doing, a discussion of various issues affecting the residents and other musings -- “just for fun”. Just an Opinion is a good place to smile at the quirks of our Township as well as serious discuss issues. Take time to comment, argue, and write posts to Just an Opinion. It is time to generate community pride!

Happy New Year

2011 was an interesting year with wonderful accomplishments, stressful events, and some disappointments. It was disappointing that the attack on our Township by Geryville Materials did not end. But it was very gratifying that the Courts and the Planning Commission gave credence to the premise that people should be able to live in peace and with the expectation that they can preserve their rural environment. It was disappointing that that divisions in our community occurred that led to a rancorous primary election for Supervisor. But it was satisfying to see that money could not buy an election and that people with self serving motives would not be accepted as our future leaders.  We saw our community modernize with a sewer system that will protect our valuable Saucon Creek. However, we also witnessed many in our community lose their fortunes and homes as a result of greedy and unproductive bankers who have gone unpunished. We were disappointed at seeing our volunteer EMT dissolved but they did so in a manner that gained our respect. They worked hard with the supervisors and other EMT's to ensure our citizens were protected. Thankfully, our neighbors with viable EMT services responded to provide better emergency response services.

We can be grateful for the residents who have understood the need to fight to protect our quality of life and responded. We are grateful to people who volunteered their facilities so that neighbors could discuss the future of Limeport. This is a great community.  May 2012 strengthen our resolve to protect this unique Township. May the New Year bring us even more joy and certainty that Lower Milford Township will remain a great place to live.

Planning Comission Rejects Proposal for Land Development for Quarry

By unanimous vote the Lower Milford Township Planning Commission rejected the proposal by Gerryville Materials for a land development plan for a quarry on property at West Mill Hill and Kings Highway. The plan was for 86 acres of the 628 acres owned by Geryville Materials as the first phase of quarry site. This brings an end to the 2 year plus testimony. Geryville Materials has indicated that it will appeal the decision to the Court of Common Pleas.

The plan was rejected for two main reasons:

1. The plan was submitted for one parcel of land of 86 acres but used all 628 acres to justify land use set asides necessary to safeguard the wetrlands, environment, and surrounding property from harm as required by ordinances. Since the property is divided by a road, the ordinance requires that the property be considered separately.

2. The location was not suitable for the use. Testimony indicated problems with traffic, and water run off not easily cureable at this location.

Lower Milford Kicks of Planning Study for Limeport at Limeport Inn

Lower Milford Township has obtained a grant to study how to preserve Limeport as a village center. Limeport has man houses that have historical significance. It has been recently rezoned permitting shops and commerce in the area. It is important to allow these changes while controlling changes so the village character is preserved.

Mark Jamison hosted the event at the Limeport Inn. About 30 residents of Lower Milford Township attended this kickoff event. The expressed their concerns over traffic flow, suggested changes to the surroundings by adding walk paths, playgrounds, and suggested the desirability of rerouting Limeport Pike. Donna Wright, Township Supervisor, said that this was the first of many meetings. Brandywine, consultants for this study, will take suggestions and data from other areas and develop a plan for the Village.

Alleged Dump on Quarry Site

At the February Zoning Board Meeting, during the hearing on an application for a quarry and asphalt plant on West Mill Hill Road, a witness for Lower Milford Township made two serious allegations:

  • The calculations that the witness made for infiltration of quarry water was wrong. The actual result would be that some of the  water would seep out of the ground rather than percolate into the soil. This could result in land erosion, pollution of streams, and other adverse affects.
  • There is an existing dump on the land which the quarry water could leach and cause pollution and health problems. There have not been current measurements of water quality to see if this dump is endangering groundwater.
